June 4, 1944 - January 14, 2020
Charlotte Raye (Sherry) Barbaree, 75, of Oklahoma City, OK, died Tuesday, January 14, 2020 after a brief illness and surrounded in her home by her loving family. Sherry was born to Charles Leroy (Blackie) Peterson and Donna Nautila McIntyre-Peterson on June 4, 1944 in Oklahoma City, OK. She was raised there, along with her sister, Frankie Ann Peterson-Herzer. They moved to Hobbs, NM then to Gruver, TX where she attended high school. In 1959, she met Calvin Lynn Barbaree and became his wife on May 26, 1962 at First Presbyterian Church in Guymon, OK. They began their life together in Goodwill, OK while attending Oklahoma Panhandle State University. They moved to Ponca City, OK where they were blessed with two daughters, Michelle Diane (Micky) Barbaree-Hoopes and Joana Sharon Barbaree- Jeffries. They then followed Calvin’s work to Celanese in Pampa, TX where they lived for 22 years. While in Pampa, they were blessed with a third daughter, Noelle Joyce Barbaree-Lankford. Again, following Calvin’s work with Celanese, they lived in Corpus Christi, TX for 6 years and Lewisville, TX for 2 years. In retirement, they finally settled in Oklahoma City, OK where they have lived for 20 years. Sherry made a life-long career as a dedicated homemaker, a selfless and seemingly thankless job. In addition to working in the home, Sherry volunteered her time to four special churches, including First Baptist Church of Pampa, TX, Second Baptist Church of Corpus Christi, TX, First Baptist Church of Lewisville, TX, and First Moore Baptist Church of Moore, OK. Sherry spent 30 years of service as a children’s Sunday School teacher. During her final years of teaching, she developed a strong affinity and heart for special needs children and adults. She also worked part-time as a church secretary in both Pampa, TX and Corpus Christi, TX. Sherry had a distinct talent for writing. Utilizing this God-given gift, she wrote and developed children’s Sunday School curriculum for The Southern Baptist Convention, penned a Christian inspirational daily column entitled His Touch, for The Pampa News, and published/sold four children’s books entitled The Jumbled Gymnast, A Very Merry Gary Derryberry Day, The Princess and the World’s Most Wonderful Blankadoo, and Morgan McMouth.
